SPORTS CHIROPRACTIC

AT MEND HEALTH & WELLNESS

What is a Sports Chiropractor?

Sports chiropractors help athletes perform at their highest level, reduce risk of injury, and reduces recovery time from injuries. As the trusted team chiropractors for the G League Maine Celtics Basketball Team and the Maine Mariners ECHL Hockey Team, our sports chiropractors utilize evidence-based treatments with a combination of manual adjustments and muscle release techniques to correct joint dysfunction and improve overall functional movement.

At Mend Chiropractic in Scarborough, patients do not have to be professional athletes to receive the benefit of sports chiropractic care. Though commonly associated with back pain relief, sports chiropractic care provides full-body benefits by supporting the optimal function of both the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, leading to improved overall well-being.

Treatment typically involves manual therapy, often including spinal manipulation. The manual treatment methods used by Mend Chiropractic range from stretching with sustained pressure to specific joint and joint manipulations, which are usually delivered by hand and involve a quick and gentle thrust. The purpose of the manipulations is to improve joint motion and function. Manipulations are most commonly done on the spine, but other parts of the body may also be treated in this way. Other forms of treatment, such as exercise, shockwave therapy, cold laser, and nutrition, may be used as well.

At Mend Health & Wellness we help patients feel and move better, and for athletes, that can mean the difference between playing their best or being sidelined. Sports chiropractic isn’t limited to professional athletes. Athletes at all levels can benefit from regular chiropractic care. From youth sports to Scarborough High School athletes.

Another fun fact is that all professional football and Major League Baseball (MLB) teams have at least one Doctor of Chiropractic on staff. All but three of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) 32 teams have at least one Doctor of Chiropractic on staff. Chiropractic care is also provided at major international sports events including the Olympics. Sports chiropractors have also been part of the care for the IRONMAN triathlon and the New York and Boston Marathons

HOW DOES SPORTS CHIROPRACTIC WORK?

At Mend Health in Scarborough Maine, our chiropractors utilize evidence-based manual adjustments and techniques to correct joint dysfunction and improve movement.

Mend Chiropractors are licensed health care professionals that approach patient care in a manner similar to that used in conventional medicine. They interview the patient, obtain a detailed health history, perform an examination, do tests, and develop a working diagnosis. They then develop a management plan, start treatment, and monitor the patient’s progress.

We don’t cut corners, and if a specialist referral is needed, we prioritize that over unnecessary charges. We believe in building trust with each patient and providing transparent, effective care that prioritizes their health goals.

HOW DOES A SPORTS CHIROPRACTOR HELP?

The science behind chiropractic manipulative therapy is highly effective. Here’s are some research studies of how it works:

1. Mechanical Stimulation
Chiropractic manipulative therapy generates a high-velocity low amplitude adjustment to create and promote healing at a cellular level. Which reduces pain and inflammation.

2. Reduction of Pain Meds
Patients who saw a chiropractor as their initial provider for low back pain (LBP) had 90% decreased odds of both early and long-term opioid use.

3. Reduction of Scar Tissue and Calcifications
Over time, injuries can lead to the buildup of scar tissue or calcified deposits in tendons or joints. Chiropractic manipulative therapy helps break down these deposits, restoring flexibility and reducing pain associated with restricted movement.

4. Low Back Pain
Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy in conjunction with standard medical care offers a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared with only standard care, for men and women between 18 and 35 years of age with acute low back pain.
5. Headaches
Six to eight sessions of upper cervical and upper thoracic manipulation were shown to be more effective than mobilization and exercise in patients with cervicogenic headache, and the effects were maintained at 3 months.

6. Pain Relief
Three in four people who see a chiropractor (77%) describe chiropractic care as very effective.

7. Improved Biomechanics:
By restoring proper movement in the joints, chiropractic care can improve overall spinal movement, posture, and function, decreasing stress on the body.

  • Dr. Tracy and Dr. Victor are amazing chiropractors who care about your total health. This is not your typical crack and come back weekly place. I went there with back pain and they discovered that it was not my back, but a tight muscle. They stretched it and gave me exercises to make it better. Come visit Dr. Tracy and Dr. Victor and let them figure out the root of the problem for a long term solution. Thank you to the amazing Chiropractors who are hiding in plain sight on Route 1.

  • I have been suffering with knee pain for the last year and a half. I saw an orthopedic at Maine Med fearing something was torn. The ortho told me that nothing was torn, but after years of playing sports, I will have to live with knee pain, it's just part of "getting old". I'm only 51 and I didn't plan on living with it the rest of my life so I went to Mend. Tracey identified the issue as muscular and not structural.. She trained me on proper use of a foam roller, and has started deep tissue therapy. My knee feels amazing compared to what it was after just a session and a couple weeks of foam rolling. I can't wait to see how it feels after a few more sessions. Tracey and Victor are great, and I highly recommend them.
