Knee Pain Prevention

Knee Pain

Can occur from the most common daily activities. From bending down to climbing stairs, walking from your vehicle to the office, or simply getting out of bed can become difficult when you’re dealing with knee pain. It certainly has a huge impact on your ability to function optimally. The knee joint is composed of a capsule, various ligaments, bursa, menisci and muscles. Injury to any of these tissues can affect the joint mechanics and cause pain. The fact that it is an active weight-bearing joint are factors in making the knee one of the most commonly injured joints in the body.

You don’t have to live with the pain, limit your activities, or take more pain medication. You can give a chiropractor in Portland Maine a try. In most cases, an experienced chiropractor can identify the underlying issues causing the pain and use a combination of techniques that yield knee pain relief.

At Mend Health & Wellness, a patient with knee pain does not just have a knee evaluation; we conduct a thorough movement screen on your initial visit to get an overview of your general mobility. Many runners and athletes often have knee pain due to the excessive shortening of the hip flexor muscles and weakened glutes. Specifically, when dealing with knee pain, if you are lacking mobility in your ankle or hip, those excess forces will be transmitted through your knee joint. So correcting mobility concerns above and below the knee joint often times improves knee pain.

Some Common Conditions We Treat

Patellar Tendinitis

Patellar tendonitis or tendonopathy is a condition where the patellar tendon becomes inflamed due to repetitive strain. Excessive strain of the tendon is usually caused by quadricep or hip flexor tension. These muscular asymmetries are easy to discover and correct leading to less tension on the tendon.

IT Band Syndrome

IT Band syndrome, common in runners and cyclists, it is where the IT Band becomes tight causing compression over the bursae around the knee. IT Band syndrome usually presents around the outside the knee but can occur anywhere along the IT Band. Excessive tension is typically caused by a weak gluteus medius causing excessive leg adduction when walking or running.

Chondromalacia Patella

AKA Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is a broad term used to describe pain at or surrounding the knee cap. Sometimes fluid or swelling around the knee cap may be present. Patellofemoral syndrome is usually caused by muscular asymmetries around the knee causing tracking issues of the knee cap. Poor tracking or positioning of the knee cap then causes friction which in turns produces pain or swelling.

Shin Splints

Tibial Stress syndrome, common in runners and cyclists, it is where the Anterior tibialis becomes tight causing compression around the shin. Shin splints usually presents in front of the tibia but can occur anywhere along the lower leg. Excessive tension is typically caused by a weak intrinsic foot muscles causing excessive leg pronation when walking or running.

Knee Pain Patient Review

I have been suffering with knee pain for the last year and a half. I saw an orthopedic at Maine Med fearing something was torn. The ortho told me that nothing was torn. Tracey identified the issue as muscular and not structural. She trained me on proper use of a foam roller, and has started deep tissue therapy. My knee feels amazing compared to what it was after just a session and a couple weeks of foam rolling. I can't wait to see how it feels after a few more sessions. Tracey and Victor are great, and I highly recommend them.
